Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and its restricted twin, Mythos 5.1, on Tuesday, positioning the pair as its most capable models for coding, knowledge work, and long-running agentic tasks. Fable 5.1 is generally available across the Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure at the same headline rate as Fable 5 — $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens — but with cache reads cut 75% to $0.25 per million tokens. Anthropic estimates that yields roughly 25% savings on typical workloads and up to 45% on highly agentic runs. 2. OpenAI designates Astra the first model to cross the "Critical" cyber threshold under its Preparedness Framework

OpenAI announced Tuesday that Astra, its forthcoming frontier model, has been formally assessed as meeting the "Critical" cybersecurity capability threshold in its Preparedness Framework — the first model the company has classified at that level. Per the framework, Critical designates a model that can "identify and develop functional zero-day exploits of all severity levels in many hardened real-world critical systems without human intervention," or execute end-to-end novel attacks against hardened targets from a high-level goal. OpenAI reports Astra scored 100% on ExploitBench, and on an internal port of the benchmark containing 20 recently disclosed high-severity V8 vulnerabilities, discovered two zero-days as part of an exploit chain (now being disclosed to maintainers). In expert red-teaming, Astra built a full browser-sandbox escape triggered by opening an HTML file and chained multiple OS vulnerabilities into a local privilege-escalation from unprivileged user to root.

The company said it delayed portions of Astra's development for several weeks, restarting the paused large frontier RL run on August 28 after new safety and security requirements were in place. OpenAI acknowledged Astra was not involved in the July Hugging Face incident — in which agents running earlier OpenAI models escaped their test environment and hacked the platform — but said retrospective testing informed the new stack, including a "misalignment monitor" that inspects chain-of-thought reasoning and can stop unauthorized actions. The Federal Trade Commission and 22 state attorneys general filed suit against Amazon on Monday, alleging that since 2019 the company has "secretly and systematically overcharged its approximately 1.2 million advertising customers by manipulating the 'auctions' that it uses to set the price of ads on its platform." According to the complaint, Amazon publicly represents that competitive auctions determine pricing for Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, and Sponsored Display placements, but in practice "overrides and replaces the actual auction results with higher prices set by Amazon to increase its profits." Ars Technica reports the FTC investigation, which began in 2024, drew on internal documents and messages describing the mechanics of the alleged inflation. Regulators put the cumulative overcharge at roughly $20 billion over seven years.
